Kazakhstan’s move against its Jehovah’s Witnesses is of a piece with recent raids against fellow Christian denominations. As the most recent assessment from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on Kazakhstan illustrated, government officials recently turned their sights on Baptists and Pentecostals, the latter of which, like Jehovah’s Witnesses, originally began as an American strain of Christianity. Per USCIRF, Kazakh police “reportedly fined without trial at least three Council of Churches Baptists,” although one fine was later annulled. Police also raided a pair of Baptist summer camps last year, with a Pentecostal church in Aktau likewise “a frequent target of official harassment.” While Ahmadi and Hare Krishna texts have also been banned in the country, administrative fines — the most frequent kind of punishment deployed against religious groups in Kazakhstan — “are often levied against Christians.” Kazakhstan's economy grew by 4.1% in the first half of 2019, reflecting robust expansions in household and business spending. Poverty is estimated to have fallen to 8.4%. Economic growth is projected to slow going forward as oil production levels off. Kazakhstan has a land area equal to that of Western Europe but one of the lowest population.

Countering these dangerous distortions is one of the challenges [ Today, the traditions of Kazakhstan are part of the national doctrine, which is based on four principles: trust, transparency, tolerance, and tradition. The country's leadership supports the preservation and revival of national traditions, and various organizations work to disseminate information about the history and traditions of the Kazakh.

Kazakhstan’s east and southeast possess extensive watercourses: most of the country’s 7,000 streams form part of the inland drainage systems of the Aral and Caspian seas and Lakes Balkhash and Tengiz. The major exceptions are the great Irtysh, Ishim (Esil), and Tobol rivers, which run northwest from the highlands in the southeast and, crossing Russia, ultimately drain into Arctic waters. In the west the major stream, the Ural (Kazakh: Zhayyq) River, flows into the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan’s repressive government seeks to control all areas of life. Religious freedom has been further restricted by recent legislation, while the government is using the threat of militant Islam as a pretext to clamp down. Churches that are active in evangelism are subjected to raids, threats, arrests and fines – especially if the church has not been registered. The Initiative on amendments to the religious laws provides prospects for repressions while alternative ways to realize the rights of believers haven’t been introduced yet. Bans have led to some absurd situations mostly affecting the representatives of religious minorities. For once, human rights activists had to fight for the freedom of Protestant minister Yuri Pak sentenced in 2016 to two years in prison on far-fetched charges. Alongside with him, Orthodox Christians, Kazakhstan’s second largest denomination, were fined. The bases for the penalties were an attempt to disseminate the book about the Life of St. Sergius of Radonezh and an ad for a self-made picture of the Virgin Mary. The vegetation on plains and deserts includes wormwood and tamarisk, with feather grass on drier plains. Kazakhstan has very little wooded area, amounting to only about 3 percent of the territory. Many animals, including antelope and elk, inhabit the plains. The wolf, bear, and snow leopard, as well as the commercially important ermine and sable, are found in the hills. Fishermen take sturgeon, herring, and roach from the Caspian Sea. In parts of northeastern and southwestern Kazakhstan, where commercial fishing collapsed as a result of industrial and agricultural pollution, efforts to revive fish populations have shown some success. In 2008 Kazakhstan’s Naurzum and Korgalzhyn state nature reserves were named a UNESCO World Heritage site; both are important habitats for migrating birds, as well as for many other animal species.

The modern day Republic of Kazakhstan has sprung from an ancient and varied history, spanning a time of early nomadic tribes to a Khan occupation, becoming a Soviet State and later declaring. During the Russian and later the Soviet rule many Kazakh traditional values and customs seized to exist since the country was involved in creating a new Soviet person and a new Soviet culture. Therefore, for the most part, the cultural life of Kazakhstan was indistinguishable from that elsewhere in the Soviet Union. It featured the same plays, films, music, books, paintings, museums, and other cultural features common in every other corner of the Soviet empire. The collapse of the Soviet system led to almost total collapse of public interest in most forms of higher culture. Most of the books that Kazakstanies buy are about business, astrology, or sex; the movies they see are nearly all American, Chinese, or Turkish adventure and action films; most concerts feature rock music, not infrequently accompanied by erotic dancing; and television provides a diet of old Soviet films and dubbed Mexican soap operas. Kazakhstan’s cultural elite is suffering the same decline affecting the elites of all the former Soviet republics. Thus, cultural norms are determined predominantly by Kazakhstan’s increasing access to global mass culture. Lowlands make up one-third of Kazakhstan’s huge expanse, hilly plateaus and plains account for nearly half, and low mountainous regions about one-fifth. Kazakhstan’s highest point, Mount Khan-Tengri (Han-t’eng-ko-li Peak) at 22,949 feet (6,995 metres), in the Tien Shan range on the border between Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and China, contrasts with the flat or rolling terrain of most of the republic. The western and southwestern parts of the republic are dominated by the low-lying Caspian Depression, which at its lowest point lies some 95 feet below sea level. South of the Caspian Depression are the Ustyurt Plateau and the Tupqaraghan (formerly Mangyshlak) Peninsula jutting into the Caspian Sea. Vast amounts of sand form the Greater Barsuki and Aral Karakum deserts near the Aral Sea, the broad Betpaqdala Desert of the interior, and the Muyunkum and Kyzylkum deserts in the south. Most of these desert regions support slight vegetative cover fed by subterranean groundwater. Hopefully, the leaders of world and traditional religions would suggest to the Kazakh government better ways of fighting national security threats related to religion unless the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation built in 2006 especially for inter-confessional conferences would not be dismantled as undermining Astana’s news perception of “secularity.”

Today’s Kazakhstan is rediscovering its national heroes and glorious past after the long rule of Russian and then Soviet Empires. Many Kazakh national heroes whose names are given to streets and parks are associated with the struggle of the nation against the XVII-th century foreign invaders called Jungars that carried out plundering raids into Kazakh lands. The great sons of Kazakh people of that time - Tole bi, Kazybek bi and Aiteke bi managed to unite a nation and deliver a smashing blow to the foreign invaders. This was done due to military talents of a number of batyrs (hero warriors) and khans (Kabanbay, Bogenbay, Nauryzbay, and Karasay batyrs) headed by Abylay-khan who organized a victorious campaign of Kazakhs against the Jungars. Some countries, including Kazakhstan, do not derive all of these possible benefits owing to their distance from global markets and owing to complex regulatory and procedural measures that inflate transaction costs and undermine competitiveness. In Kazakhstan, such measures tend to create trade barriers of greater significance than tariffs I would say that two types of supervisor were respected:  the strong dominant ones and the personable ‘people’ type persons.  General characteristics that are regarded highly include: intelligence, fairness, ability to direct and ability to listen.  How one is viewed should be fairly apparent, as previously mentioned, emotions are enthusiastically demonstrated! There is a tendency to be slightly unsure of an expatriate boss upon first meeting but an expatriate boss usually means ‘better’ job in terms of pay, etc.  Employees are pleased to have an expat boss. One of the stereotypes locals have about Canadians is that they oftentimes directly associate Canadians with Americans. However, considering the latest events in the world, especially the war in Iraq and non-participation of Canada in the war, Kazakhstanies came to realize that Canadians are different from Americans in one significant respect – they are a more peace loving nation who tends to resolve conflicts differently than Americans, mostly through negotiations. In more recent times, Kazakhs have gradually employed determined effort in revitalizing Islamic religious institutions after the fall of the Soviet Union. While not strongly fundamentalist, Kazakhs continue to identify with their Islamic faith,[13] and even more devotedly in the countryside. Those who claim descent from the original Muslim warriors and missionaries of the 8th century command substantial respect in their communities.[14] Kazakh political figures have also stressed the need to sponsor Islamic awareness. For example, the Kazakh Foreign Affairs Minister, Marat Tazhin, recently emphasized that Kazakhstan attaches importance to the use of "positive potential Islam, learning of its history, culture and heritage."[15] The decision to elect Yerzhan Mayamerov was made unanimously by the participants of the 7th Kurultai of Kazakhstan Muslims. They also tend to think that the problems Canadians face are less significant. When they hear about the problems Canadians have they sometimes even refuse to recognize them as problems. One even hears them saying with a sneer, “I wish I had their problems!”Kazakhstan’s distinct regional patterns of settlement depend in part on its varied ethnic makeup. Slavs—Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians—largely populate the northern plains, where they congregate in large villages that originally served as the centres of collective and state farms. These populated oases are separated by wheat fields or, in the more arid plains to the south, by semideserts and deserts where sheep breeders live in temporary quarters, usually yurts (round tents with sturdy pole frames covered by heavy felt).

Older generation might frown at the displays of emotion and affection and disapprove of them. Displays of anger could also be seen even in professional settings where superiors sometimes yell at their employees. This might stem from the Soviet times with its strict, nearly military hierarchy and command system of management whereby superiors had almost total and unrestricted power over their subordinates.
